PeaceMaker / About Us

INTRODUCTION

PeaceMaker was formed in 1997 in Oldham when a group of young British Asians, deeply concerned by the depressing slide into segregation which they were witnessing around them, started to take action to halt the decline. The organisation was founded to help overcome the fear and prejudice prevalent accross Oldham, the division between communities and the lack of services encouraging cross-community engagement.

Initially creating small, volunteer-led community initiatives, their aim was simple: to defend and increase the opportunities for others that they themselves had enjoyed while growing up - opportunities to meet and befriend other young people from different communities and ethnicities. Calling their group ‘PeaceMaker’ these far-sighted youngsters used their informal networks and youth club contacts to try and promote a climate of multicultural growth in their home town.
